In the Eye of the Beholder: Micromanaging versus Being Supportive

I have had the opportunity to speak with many, many employees over time. A very common complaint about managers and owners is that of ‘micromanaging’. If there is anything that can be perceived as demoralizing for an employee, it is to feel they are being micromanaged. This feeling results in the employee not believing they ‘own’ their job or not trusted to do their job accurately. It can evoke anger and may also create a lack of motivation to improve their skills, believing they will never satisfy the boss.

On the other hand, the manager’s/owner’s reaction to being told they micromanage is typically expressed in one of two ways. The first and most common in my experience: ‘I want to make sure it is done right’. The second: ‘I am trying to be supportive’. For those owners who want things done ‘right’, the question to ask is: Do I want the ‘end result’ to be effective, or do I want my employees to do it the same way I do it…to be a mini-me? Trust me your employees will never be able to do it ‘just like you do it’. Concentrate on the ‘what’ (results) and not the ‘how’ (you do it). When your employees achieve effective results, reward them for that, rather than demand they do it exactly like you do.

For employers who want to provide ‘support’, the question to ask yourself: ‘Does the employee need support, or do I need to be needed’? If your employee requires support, be specific in both the type and the amount they require to learn the skills you desire. When they demonstrate they have the requisite skills, let them do their job. Do not become their roadblock.

Micromanaging can become a serious issue in the area of employee morale. If you are perceived as ‘micromanaging’ you may want to ask yourself some key questions about how you manage employees.
